Take Two Nail Art Challenge - Day 1 - Inspired By A Band

OK its the first day of my first challenge - exciting! I am a total nail art noob, so I am really looking forward to learning some new techniques and trying heaps of stuff out :)

The brief for today is Inspired By A Band... I struggled a little with this one at first, surprisingly as I LOVE music and have a pretty substantial CD collection. I decided to look though my collection for a bit of inspiration and right on top of the CDs sitting next to my stereo was a CD I was given for my birthday last month - Birds of Toyko, This Fire.

Cling Wrap Nail Art Cling Ulta3 Pink Hibiscus and Royal Fever Take Two Challenge

Birds of Tokyo are one of my all time favourite bands, I have seen them live heaps of times and I have loved them each time :)

This album cover was so cool and I thought yeah - pink and purple are awesome together so I will try and recreate the album cover on my nails.

I tried out a few different colours to see what would work best, but I ended up with two Ulta3 colours - Royal Fever (which is awesome and deserves it's own blog post soon!) and Pink Hibiscus.

I toyed with the idea of doing a splatter, but chickened out because of the potential mess lol, so I tried a few other things to see what would work. Sponging the pink shade over the purple meant the whole nail ended up too pink, as I had to do a few sponge coats to get the pink to really show, because all my pinks were a bit too sheer for one coat over the dark purple.

I then tried 4 different shades of pink over the purple (different shade on each nail) and tried the cling wrap technique. I've tried sponging polish on to the nail before using a bunched up piece of cling wrap as a 'sponge' but I wasn't so happy with it, so this time I did a base coat of Royal Fever and then put a coat of the various pinks over the top.  I got the cling wrap and used it to take off some of the pink polish, but when I did it, I hadn't waited long enough for the purple to dry, so I ended up pulling the base coat off with the pink, so that was a fail. I did discover that Ulta3 Pink Hibiscus was the best out of the four shades I tested though, so my efforts weren't wasted.

OK so third time lucky, I put on a base coat of Royal Fever, then Wicked Fast top coat, let it dry for as long as it took me to write most of this post and play on pinterest - about 20-30 minutes, then I did a coat of Pink Hibiscus over the top.  I waited about 30 seconds, then got a bunch of cling wrap and used it to pull off the pink.

It worked and looked awesome - it looked just like the album cover and I was feeling all proud and excited. But then I made the mistake of putting top coat over the top.

Whilst all manicures can do with top coat in my opinion, in this case, it ended up almost mixing the two colours together as I put it on, which I didn't want. Nice if colour smoothing is the effect you want, but it hid the purple underneath the pink too much and didn't look quite as much like the album cover anymore - it wasn't so dotty, more swirly. Except the thumb, maybe that was a bit drier or something, as that still retained more of the dotty/splotchy look I was aiming for. So yes, next time I shall wait for ages before putting top coat on - especially when using Ulta3 which generally isn't quick drying for me.

So that is it, my first day of my first challenge. Hopefully I did OK, I am pretty happy with it and that is the main thing. What do you think of it?

PS I thought I would link to a couple of Birds of Tokyo songs in case you would like to have a listen: This Fire the first song of this album and a couple of my favourite older/grungier songs Silhouettic and Broken Bones.

  3. Love the colours and they match the album perfectly! Very cool! Sorry about the top coat mishap :\ This would look really cool with a matte top coat imo. Even more like the album!

  5. Thanks! :) I reckon you're right about the matte top coat Shannon - that is something on my wish list, but every time I have bought polish in the last few months it has been out of stock, so hopefully I can find some soon and have fun playing with it :) xox
